Wilson Elementary School Case Study

Wilson Elementary School playground with new artificial turf.

Project Overview

Wilson Elementary School, part of Spokane Public Schools, set out to create a safe, durable, and modern playground experience for its students. Partnering with Garco Construction, ATS Turf was selected to install the first-ever artificial turf playground system in the Spokane Public Schools district — marking a major step forward in school playground innovation.

The project included two distinct play areas: one designed for elementary-age children and another tailored for younger kids. Each space was equipped with SYNLAWN artificial turf paired with a Brock impact attenuation pad, providing industry-leading safety, performance, and long-term durability.

Challenges

Spokane Public Schools had traditionally relied on surfacing materials like rubber mulch, bark chips, or poured-in-place rubber — all of which require significant maintenance and can degrade quickly in Spokane’s variable climate. The goal was to find a cleaner, safer, and longer-lasting alternative that would also elevate the aesthetic of the playground.

Our Solution

ATS Turf recommended the SYNLAWN turf system with Brock padding, offering a seamless combination of safety and playability.

  • The Brock impact pad ensures consistent fall protection, even after years of use.
  • The SYNLAWN turf system provides natural play feel, superior drainage, and year-round usability.
  • The surface is low maintenance, eliminating the mess and upkeep associated with loose-fill materials.

Results

The Wilson Elementary playground has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from school administrators, staff, and parents. Students enjoy the consistent, soft play surface, and maintenance crews appreciate the reduced upkeep.

This project not only enhanced the safety and play experience for students but also set a new benchmark for Spokane Public Schools—paving the way for future artificial turf playgrounds across the district.
